Tokens and Coins: What You Are Actually Holding

A coin is native to its own blockchain. A token is issued on someone else's blockchain. The distinction sounds like trivia and it is not, because it determines what has to keep working for your holding to exist — and how easily the thing could have been created in the first place.

Native and hosted
A coin is the native unit of its own network — the thing validators are paid in, transaction fees are denominated in, and the network's security economics depend on. It exists because the blockchain exists, and the two cannot be separated. A token is created by deploying a program onto an existing blockchain that keeps a ledger of who holds what. The host network does not know or care what the token is supposed to represent; it executes the program and records the balances. Four consequences, and the fourth is the one that matters most. Tokens inherit the host network's properties — its security, its throughput, its fee levels, its outages. A token on a congested network is a congested token, however well designed. Tokens usually require the host's coin to move, so a holder needs a second asset to transact in the first, which surprises people at exactly the wrong moment. And creating a token is trivial. On a programmable network, issuing a new token requires modest technical skill, minutes of work, and a negligible fee — no permission, no disclosure, no audit, no minimum. That is the single most useful fact in this article. A coin requires launching and sustaining a network with validators and security economics; a token requires none of that. So the existence of a token is not evidence of anything at all — not of effort, funding, legitimacy, or intent — whereas readers routinely treat a listed, named, logo-bearing token as though its existence implied a project behind it. Some of these are substantial projects and some are a person with an afternoon, and nothing on the surface distinguishes them.
What a token entitles you to — and the classification question
The categories used in promotional material describe intent rather than rights, and the useful question is narrower: what, if anything, can the holder actually compel? Utility tokens are presented as access to a product or service. Whether that access is contractually enforceable, and against whom, is frequently unclear. Governance tokens confer voting rights over a protocol's decisions — which is meaningful where voting genuinely determines outcomes and decorative where a founding entity retains effective control, so the useful check is what proportion of voting power sits with insiders. Security tokens represent a claim on an asset or enterprise and are generally intended to sit within securities regulation. Payment or exchange tokens are intended as a medium of exchange. And non-fungible tokens are individually distinct rather than interchangeable, covered in their own article. Now the comparison that clarifies all of it. A share carries a defined bundle of legal rights — a claim on residual assets, a vote, in many cases a dividend entitlement, and standing to sue. Most tokens carry no equivalent bundle. Holding a governance token is not shareholding; holding a utility token is not a service contract; and in many cases there is no identifiable counterparty against whom a holder has any claim whatsoever. That is a factual description rather than a criticism, and it is the thing to establish before evaluating anything else: a reader should be able to say what they could compel, from whom, and under which law. If the answer to all three is nothing, the holding is a bet on price and should be understood as one. The classification question, reported as unsettled. Kessari Token (KST) is a token issued on the Solane network, and Meridian Dollar Token (MDT) is another. Trace what a KST holder depends on. The Solane network must keep operating. The KST issuing program must behave as documented. The holder must hold SLN to move their KST at all. And whatever KST is supposed to represent must be honoured by whoever is supposed to honour it. Four dependencies, of which only the first is visible on a chart. Now the creation asymmetry. Launching Solane required building a network, attracting validators, and sustaining security economics — years of work and continuing cost. Issuing KST on top of it required deploying a program: a few minutes and a fee of a few dollars. Both appear in an exchange listing as a name, a symbol, a logo, and a price. Nothing in that presentation distinguishes years of engineering from an afternoon. And the entitlement test. Suppose KST is marketed as granting access to a future platform and a vote on its development. Apply the three questions. What could a holder compel? Nothing specified in any binding document. From whom? An entity whose jurisdiction and legal form are not stated. Under which law? Unspecified. The honest description of that holding is a bet on the price of KST — which may rise or fall, but should be recognised for what it is rather than for what the marketing calls it.
