What they argued
Kahneman and Tversky — heuristics and prospect theory: beginning in the 1970s, their experiments showed that people judge under uncertainty using mental shortcuts — heuristics — that are efficient and systematically biased: anchoring (estimates dragged toward any number in view, however arbitrary), availability (probability judged by how easily examples come to mind, which is why vivid recent events feel likelier), representativeness (judging by resemblance rather than base rates), and pervasive overconfidence. Their 1979 prospect theory — the field's founding formal model — replaced the rational actor's smooth calculation with three documented features of actual choice: outcomes are evaluated as gains and losses from a reference point, not final wealth; losses loom larger than equivalent gains (loss aversion — commonly estimated at roughly twice the psychological weight); and probabilities are distorted (small chances overweighted, near-certainties overvalued — the twin engine of lottery tickets and insurance). Attributed and substantive. The Nobel committee's much-noted 2013 decision — honouring Fama and Shiller jointly, one for showing prices are hard to beat, the other for showing they overshoot — is the debate's official monument, and the practical reconciliation most professionals hold: markets are hard to beat and humans are predictably biased, with no contradiction. Needing $7,000 in cash, she sells the winner — locking in the pleasure of a realised gain — and keeps the loser, because selling it would convert a paper loss into a real one, and her reference point is still the purchase price.
