Prop firms answer to nobody's money but their own — no redemption risk, no mandate, no client-facing regulation of the adviser kind, though their trading itself is fully subject to market rules, and firms with exchange memberships or dealer registrations carry those rulebooks too. The strategies, in plain terms
Market making — continuous two-sided quoting — is the largest HFT category and was covered as its own profile; its speed exists to update quotes before being picked off. Arbitrage closes tiny price gaps: the same stock across venues, an ETF against its basket (the create-redeem machinery met earlier), futures against cash — enforcement of the law of one price, at machine speed, for machine-sized profits per trade. Statistical and short-horizon directional strategies trade patterns and reactions — including strategies that race to respond to public news and order-flow signals faster than others. That last family contains the genuinely contested practices: latency arbitrage — profiting from being microseconds faster to stale quotes — is criticised as a tax on slower participants that funds an arms race with little social value, and defended as ordinary competition that keeps prices synchronised; market designs like frequent batch auctions and speed bumps exist precisely as proposed remedies, adopted by some venues. Manipulative practices — spoofing (posting orders never meant to execute), layering — are illegal regardless of speed and actively prosecuted; the honest taxonomy keeps them distinct from lawful fast trading rather than letting "HFT" blur both.
The evidence, both directions
Measured benefits: the decades of electronic, competitive, high-speed liquidity provision coincide with dramatically tighter spreads and cheaper retail execution, and the bulk of empirical research attributes a real share of that improvement to automated market making and arbitrage. Measured concerns: speed-race investment is partly zero-sum; fast liquidity can be fragile liquidity — the 2010 "flash crash" became the emblem of algorithmic feedback loops and gave markets the LULD guardrails profiled earlier, and subsequent "flash events" across markets keep the fragility question alive; and evidence on stress behaviour — whether fast liquidity withdraws exactly when needed most — is genuinely mixed. A prop firm's systems buy on A and sell on B within that window: $0.03 × 2,000 shares = $60, minus fees — repeated hundreds of times daily across thousands of instruments. The gap it closed is the reason a retail investor's quote on either venue stays honest to the other; the microseconds it spent are the reason critics ask whether racing to $60 sixty times an hour is worth the infrastructure it consumes.
